"If current immigration laws had been enforced my son would be alive today!! The fact that a LEGAL AMERICAN CITIZEN can be killed at work by an ILLEGAL while the Washington State's Department of Labor and Industries looked the other way should outrage every mother in Washington State. It should outrage every one of 2.5 million contractors and workers who pay $1.4 Billion in disability insurance premiums annually! In 2009 L&I lost $751 Million and will raise premiums on business and workers 7.6% during the 2010 recession. Friday's filing represents the desire of the vast majority of Washington citizens to join with the Governor to boost the employment prospects of American citizens and LEGAL immigrants. Whether in rural or urban areas, employment prospects are dim or deteriorating. Thousands of cash-strapped home owners are on the brink of bank repossession. This law will require E-verify enrollment by every public and private employer in Washington State. E-verify is now a condition of hire to the U.S. Gov't, City of Lakewood, City of Washougal, Pierce County and Clark County. E-verify enrollment is also a condition of contract association with those governments. The goal of immigration law generally, and "Respect for Law" specifically is to protect the employment prospects of citizens and legal immigrants as well as defend employers from underground competition and misrepresentation by job applicants. E-verify is the no-fee, web-based employment eligibility verification tool hosted by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services -- a division of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. No longer will stolen Social Security Numbers and ID theft be a ticket to employment and drivers licenses inside Washington State. "Respect for Law" will also require state and local governments to verify eligibility for public benefits and drivers licenses with the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements reference system now widely used by states to combat fraudulant application for taxpayer-funded public assistance. "Respect for Law" does not restrict emergency medical, food or shelter assistance, regardless of lawful presence status. This past week Washington State Treasurer Jim McIntire warned that without legislative action the "state treasury could be depleted as soon as September." Thousands of Respect Washington citizen volunteers statewide now rise to exercise their supreme legislative authority to advance "Respect for Law" to that "Legislature of the People" which will convene on November 2, 2010. "All political power is inherent in the people... The first power reserved by the people is the initiative." In number, 241,153 signatures of citizen sponsors need be collected by July 2, 2010 for ballot qualification.
